Our customers will be pleased to hear that we have had our carbon footprint analysed in conjunction with Net Zero Now and Lisini are proud to be the first hospitality company in Scotland to be certified as ‘On The Road to Net Zero’ with them.  Seeing our carbon footprint has highlighted areas to target reductions in emissions, which we will be implementing in stages over the coming months and years. In the first year we achieved ambitious interim targets of reducing our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50%. This was achieved through a combination of procuring renewable ‘green’ electricity contracts and behavioural changes to drive down our gas & electricity consumption.

If you have any questions or suggestions for us on a sustainability matter please contact our Sustainability Manager kay.smith@lisini.co.uk.

On The Road To Net Zero

Once we have driven down our carbon footprint as far as possible the remaining carbon will be offset by investing in carbon positive schemes, thus rendering us a genuinely NetZero hospitality company.

We hope that this will inspire other hospitality companies to follow suit. Admittedly it is not an easy, nor an inexpensive title to obtain, especially in such trying times for hospitality and many other industries. However, we must all be mindful that a collective effort is required in order to protect the planet we share.

Awards

Lisini Pub Company were very proud to be credited with the Sustainability Award at the 2023 Scottish Pub & Bar Awards. We are also excited to be shortlisted as a finalist in the 2024 VIBES Awards.

Green Teams

We have a team of employees at each of our venues dedicated to driving down energy usage and improving the environmental and social responsibility of their venue. Each year at the Lisini staff Ball we have an award for the Green Team who have made the biggest improvement and reduced their energy & water usage by the highest percentage. So far we have managed to consistently reduce our electricity usage by around 20% and gas by around 15%. Across the company this equates to 147 tonnes of CO2e saved per year.

We are continually working towards improving our environmental and social responsibility as a company and encourage our green teams to come forward with ideas as to how we can meet these objectives. Some examples of what we have implemented from their suggestions so far include: growing our own herbs for cocktails on site, composting our garden waste and fruit & veg peelings, dehydrating fruit peels for use in cocktails rather than going to food waste, forming a connection with the local community gardening group Grow Uddingston to recycle our used coffee grinds for use in their gardens (fertilizes soil and acts as a pest deterrent), installing a drying line outside for housekeepers use rather than using the tumble dryer, incorporating sustainably made spirits into our drinks offerings, switching to plant based alternatives to dairy & egg in our cocktail ingredients & installing more options on draught to eliminate bottle waste.

Sustainable Communities

Angels Hotel Green Team have teamed up with local primary school St John The Baptist to help each other out with ‘green goals’ and the Angels green team members have so far joined the school’s Eco Committee on litter picks and other sustainability events to help meet their targets.

Angels green team have also joined forces with Grow Uddingston, who keep the village looking tidy and pretty with their regular litter picks and clean ups and beautiful planters with flowers throughout the village. Angels staff regularly volunteer with them to join litter picks and do their bit to help keep the area tidy and pollution-free.

Sustainability Events

As part of our commitment to improving our environmental and social responsibility as a company we have hosted 4 completely free pop-up Swap Shops over the past few years. These have proved very popular among the local community and we are proud to encourage the concept of a circular economy among our customers and staff. Our most recent ‘Swish’ took place at The Parkville in April 2024 and was the busiest one yet, with the support of local MP Monica Lennon, who advocates for a circular economy, and local charity Revolve Recycle who got involved to help us set up and run the event.

Dalziel Park recently hosted a Tesla experience day, where we offered staff & customers the opportunity to experience driving a Tesla electric vehicle, with the aim to highlight the benefits of swapping out fossil fueled vehicles for more eco friendly versions.

Plant Based & Sustainably Sourced Food

It is becoming increasingly apparent that meat and dairy farming is one of the main contributors to global warming worldwide. As a result of this knowledge, we at Lisini are offering an increasing number of plant-based protein options, to allow our customers the option of a more planet–friendly meal choice when dining with us. This can be complemented with a sustainably certified beverage from our Sustainable Drinks list.

If that’s not your style you can relax in the knowledge that all our meat is as locally sourced as possible and therefore has the lowest possible environmental impact.

We are currently in the process of reviewing our menus to make them more seasonal and incorporating sustainably foraged ingredients, and have designed a fruit & veg garden at our biggest venue Dalziel Park on which work will be beginning soon.

Renewables

We are currently exploring different renewable avenues across our venues and hope to have PV panels installed at all our eligible venues by 2027. Work will begin over the next few months to install solar panels at our biggest venue Dalziel Park, which is projected to generate around 55,000 kWh of electricity per year!

EV Charging

We currently offer EV charging facilities at Angels Hotel and Dalziel Park Hotel, and EV charge points are available in the public car park next to The Castle Rooms. There are plans in place to have EV charging facilities across all venues in the near future, and upgrade our current charge units at Dalziel Park Hotel & Angels Hotel to ‘fast chargers’ to improve the charging network.

War On Plastic

We no longer use single use plastic products in our hotel bedrooms, instead we have refillable wall mounted bottles of our Arron Aromatics products.

We no longer use plastic straws, if you get a straw in our venue it is made of paper or biodegradable plant-based fibers.

All our waste is segregated to ensure that anything that can be recycled, is.

Back Of House

Behind the scenes we have made numerous changes to help us on our way to Net Zero, including:

  • Changing our cleaning chemicals to an eco friendly alternative
  • Installing sensor lights to reduce electricity consumption
  • All our lights are low energy where possible (this is across front and back of house)
  • All our cooking oil is recycled

Biodiversity Project

We are lucky enough to own protected woodlands as part of the golf course at our biggest venue Dalziel Park. We had a biodiversity report done in conjunction with University of Edinburgh for the area, to provide us with action points to improve the biodiversity of the nature in the area. We hope to begin work this year on improving public access to the woodlands, upgrading the degenerated areas, introducing more local plants and wildflowers, and introducing more pollinators to the area by way of our own honeybee hives. We plan to include signage to show available walking routes through the woodlands, and provide information to walkers of seasonal points of interest.

The biodiversity improvement project will be opened up to local community groups to get involved and we very much welcome advice and help from locals, customers and staff to help us restore and preserve the nature of our local area.
